Who is Lal Krishna Advani? His Political Career:

Lal Krishna Advani is an Indian politician who served as the 7th Deputy Prime Minister of India from 2002 to 2004. He also served as Minister of Home Affairs in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government from 1998 to 2004. Due to his tremendous work, he was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2015, (India’s 2nd highest civilian honour) and the Bharat Ratna in 2024 (India’s highest civilian honour).

Regarding his early life, he was born in Karachi in a Hindu Sindhi family. He completed his early schooling in Karachi, then enrolled at Government College Hyderabad, Sindh. His family migrated to India during the partition of India and settled down in Bombay, where he completed his graduation in law from Government Law College, Bombay University.

He used to read and follow the preachings of Swami Vivekanand in his early 20s. Advani joined the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) at the age of 14 in 1941, and became a full-time worker of the Karachi branch. Today, prominent figures like PM Narendra Modi and the Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee were also part of this Sangh (RSS). Then his political career started. He became General Secretary of the Jana Sangh in Rajasthan. Impressed with his work in different areas of Rajasthan, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Delhi for a six-year tenure from 1970. He also led the 1973 Kanpur session as President.

From 1976 to 1982, he was a Rajya Sabha Member from Gujarat assembly. This was the phase of the National Emergency, so after the Indira Gandhi Emergency, the Jana Sangh and many other opposition parties formed an alliance called the Janata Party. Advani and his colleague Atal Bihari Vajpayee fought the Lok Sabha election of 1977 as members of the Janata party. This is considered the actual start of his political career.

Morarji Desai became the Prime Minister of India, L.K. Advani became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Vajpayee became the Foreign Minister in the Janata Party. Many members of Jana Sangh quit the Janata Party and formed the new Bharatiya Janata Party, and Advani became the prominent leader of the newly founded BJP.

Under the leadership of L.K. Advani, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the political representative of the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign. Also, in the early 1980s, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had started a movement for the construction of a temple dedicated to Lord Rama at the site of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Before this campaign, the BJP had only won 2 seats, but after this event in 1989, the seats increased to 86.

Following back-to-back defeats of the party in the years 2004 and 2009, he resigned from all his posts in BJP on 10 June 2013, and he was given the tag of “PM IN WAITING”.

Narendra Modi was appointed as the head of the electoral campaign for the 2014 elections, while Advani joined the Marg Darshak Mandal of BJP along with Murli Manohar Joshi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
